If you think that more should be done to help Syrian refugees, you need to help convince the Federal Government that the community expects that more be done.
The best way to do this is to get in touch with your local member and with the Senators for your state.
Perhaps you could suggest that Syrian refugees be granted one-off temporary visas, like those the “Safe Haven” visas that the Howard government granted to people form Kosovo in 1999, or the visa extensions granted to Chinese students by the Hawke government after Tiananmen Square in 1989.
Perhaps you could also mention that you’d like to see any Syrians who are currently being held in offshore detention brought to the mainland immediately, and be released into the community while their refugee claims are assessed.
